NAVARATRI 2026 – Nine Nights for Nine Inner Transformations
Sharad Navaratri 2026 (11–20 October 2026) and Vijayadashami 21 October 2026
Navaratri 2026 · Day 9 – Maa Siddhidatri: The Giver of Fulfilment
1. Who Is Maa Siddhidatri?
On the ninth day, Maha Navami, we worship Maa Siddhidatri, the giver of siddhis, spiritual attainments and fulfilment. She sits on a lotus or rides a lion, holding a chakra, conch, mace, and lotus, and she is worshipped by gods, sages, siddhas, and humans alike.
The tradition tells that Lord Shiva himself received the siddhis by worshipping her, and that through her grace half of his body became the Devi’s: the form of Ardhanarishvara. She completes the journey of the nine days: steadiness, discipline, courage, creativity, wisdom, dharma, fearlessness, and purity now bear their fruit.
In the Navadurga sequence of the Devi Kavacham (shlokas 3–5), she is “navamaṃ Siddhidātrī ca”, the ninth. In many regions Navami is also the day of Saraswati Puja and Ayudha Puja, when books, instruments, and tools are honoured as forms of the Mother.
2. The Durga Saptashati Link
The final chapters complete the story begun on Day 1. In Chapter 11, the Narayani Stuti, the gods praise the victorious Devi. In Chapter 12 she herself describes the blessings of reciting her glories. In Chapter 13, King Suratha and the merchant Samadhi, whom we met in Chapter 1, perform three years of worship and receive her darshan.
Their boons are the final teaching of the Saptashati. Suratha asks for his kingdom back in this life and an unshakeable kingdom in the next; the Devi grants it, and he will be reborn as Savarni Manu. Samadhi, who has grown detached, asks only for the knowledge that frees one from “I” and “mine”, and the Devi grants him that liberating wisdom (Devi Mahatmya, adhyaya 13).
The same Mother gives both bhukti (worldly fulfilment) and mukti (liberation). What we receive depends on what we truly ask for.
3. The Astrological Link
On the final day the astrology lens widens to all nine grahas together: the Navagraha integrated, and the movement beyond planetary conditioning. Over eight days we have contemplated the mind, disciplined effort, courage, wisdom, discrimination, desire, karma, and illusion. Siddhidatri is the one in whom all these powers are complete; the grahas themselves are instruments of her Shakti.
A birth chart describes our conditioning: the tendencies we bring with us through karma. Siddhi, in its highest sense, is freedom from being driven by that conditioning. The Saptashati shows both possibilities. King Suratha asks for fulfilment within the chart, his kingdom restored. The merchant Samadhi asks for the knowledge that frees one from “I” and “mine”: freedom beyond it.
4. Astrology Message for the Day
Whatever dasha you are running, Day 9 is a day to offer the whole chart to the Mother. Recite a Navagraha stotra, or simply bow to the nine grahas as forms of her power. Ask not that the planets change, but that you meet whatever they bring with wisdom and equanimity: “samatvaṃ yoga ucyate”, evenness of mind is called yoga (Bhagavad Gita 2.48).
In many years of practice I have found that the chart shows tendencies, but sadhana and grace decide how we live them. That is the final teaching of the astrology lens in this series.
5. A Message for Youngsters
Siddhi means accomplishment. Everyone wants success, but Siddhidatri teaches that real accomplishment is a fruit of the earlier steps: steadiness, discipline, courage, creativity, wisdom, values, fearlessness, and clarity. There are no shortcuts.
Look back over these nine days. Which of the eight qualities did you practise? Choose one to continue for the next forty days. That is how a festival becomes a transformation.
6. Inner Message from Swami, Scripture, and the Sages
Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, in His Dasara discourse of 9 October 1994, taught that the three potencies of the Mother are already within us, and gave the culminating instruction: convert the power of action into a force for doing divine actions, and convert the power of discernment into the Divine itself. This is the ultimate siddhi.
Swami’s teaching is often summed up in the line “All powers are within you.” The Mother does not give us something foreign; she reveals what was always ours. [Source: Sai Inspires, 8 October 2021; original discourse date not given]
The Yoga Sutras give a needed caution: the extraordinary powers are attainments in the outward-turned state, but obstacles to samadhi (Yoga Sutras 3.37). The true siddhi is not power but freedom.
The Mundaka Upanishad: “brahma veda brahmaiva bhavati”, the knower of Brahman becomes Brahman (Mundaka Upanishad 3.2.9).
The Bhagavad Gita ends its teaching with complete surrender: “sarvadharmān parityajya mām ekaṃ śaraṇaṃ vraja”, abandoning all other supports, take refuge in Me alone; I shall free you from all sins; do not grieve (Bhagavad Gita 18.66).
7. What Everyone Should Understand
- Siddhis in the tradition are not magic tricks. The highest attainment is peace, wisdom, and freedom.
- Saraswati and Ayudha Puja honour the tools of our work and learning: books, instruments, machines, and computers are all forms of the Mother’s power.
- The Saptashati shows that worldly and spiritual blessings both come from the Devi. Neither is shameful to ask for, but one lasts longer.
- Navaratri does not end with the ninth day. Its value is in what we carry forward.
8. Practical Orientation for Day 9
- Chanting: Repeat “Om Devi Siddhidatryai Namah” 108 times.
Mantra and dhyana shloka of Maa Siddhidatri
ॐ देवी सिद्धिदात्र्यै नमः
सिद्धगन्धर्वयक्षाद्यैरसुरैरमरैरपि ।
सेव्यमाना सदा भूयात् सिद्धिदा सिद्धिदायिनी ॥
siddhagandharvayakṣādyair asurair amarair api |
sevyamānā sadā bhūyāt siddhidā siddhidāyinī ||
May Siddhidatri, served always by siddhas, gandharvas, yakshas, asuras, and gods alike, be for us the giver of attainment.
- Reading: Read Chapters 11 to 13 of the Durga Saptashati, or at least the Narayani Stuti in Chapter 11.
- Honour your tools: Clean and place before the Mother your books, instruments, or work tools, and give thanks for them.
- Review the nine days: Write down one quality from each day and choose one to continue for forty days.
- Ask like Samadhi: In your prayer today, after asking for whatever you need, ask also for wisdom and freedom from “I” and “mine”.
sarvamaṅgalamāṅgalye śive sarvārthasādhike |
śaraṇye tryambake gauri nārāyaṇi namo’stu te ||
(Devi Mahatmya 11.10)
Tomorrow: Vijayadashami, the day of victory.
