NAVARATRI 2026 – Nine Nights for Nine Inner Transformations

Sharad Navaratri 2026 (11–20 October 2026) and Vijayadashami 21 October 2026

 Navaratri 2026: –  Day 6 – Maa Katayani

1. Who Is Maa Katyayani?

On the sixth day we worship Maa Katyayani. The tradition tells that the sage Katyayana performed long tapas wishing for the Divine Mother to be born as his daughter, and she appeared in his ashram; hence her name. In many accounts it is in this form that she slays Mahishasura.

She rides a lion, holds a sword and a lotus, and her other hands grant fearlessness and blessings. She is the warrior form of the Mother acting in the service of dharma, and she is also worshipped for a good marriage and for the removal of obstacles.

In the Navadurga sequence of the Devi Kavacham (shlokas 3–5), she is “ṣaṣṭhaṃ Kātyāyanīti ca”, the sixth.

2. The Durga Saptashati Link

In Chapter 11 of the Durga Saptashati, after the final victory, the Devi gives the gods a promise that echoes the Gita’s:

itthaṃ yadā yadā bādhā dānavotthā bhaviṣyati |

tadā tadāvatīryāhaṃ kariṣyāmyarisaṅkṣayam ||

“Thus, whenever distress arises from the demons, then I shall descend and destroy the enemies.” (Devi Mahatmya 11.55)

[Verse numbers as in the Gita Press edition; please check against your copy]

This is Katyayani’s nature: the Mother who appears whenever dharma is threatened. Her worship is a reminder that the Divine protects those who stand with dharma.

3. The Astrological Link

In this series, the astrology lens for Maa Katyayani is Venus (Shukra): desire transformed into devotion. Venus governs love, beauty, relationships, marriage, comfort, and the arts. It rules Vrishabha and Tula, is exalted in Meena, and is debilitated in Kanya.

The gopis of Vraja worshipped Katyayani for a whole month, praying to have Krishna as their Lord (Srimad Bhagavatam 10.22.4). This is Venus at its highest: the longing of the heart, which in most of us is scattered among many objects, gathered and offered to the Divine. Katyayani is worshipped for a good marriage, which is Venus’s own domain, but the gopis show where that longing finally leads.

Note that the Sun is in sidereal Kanya during Navaratri, the sign of Venus’s debilitation. That makes this an apt time to refine desire rather than indulge it.

4. Astrology Message for the Day

Day 6 supports those whose charts show an afflicted Venus: debilitated in Kanya, combust, or joined with Rahu or Saturn. Such placements can show as difficulties or delays in relationships and marriage, over-attachment to comfort and pleasure, or low self-worth.

Katyayani’s worship is traditionally associated with marriage, and many families observe this day with prayers for that purpose. As a practitioner, I would add: the deeper remedy for Venus is to purify desire. Love without possessiveness, enjoy with gratitude, and offer what you love to the Divine first. When desire becomes devotion, Venus in the chart responds.

5. A Message for Youngsters

Katyayani is a warrior, but she fights only for what is right. Strength without values is dangerous; values without strength are helpless. She has both.

Ask yourself: what do I stand for? Who are the teachers, mentors, or elders I can learn from? Today, thank one teacher who shaped you, and take one decision based on what is right rather than what is easy or popular.

6. Inner Message from Swami, Scripture, and the Sages

Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, in His Vijayadasami discourse “Make Sathya and Dharma Your Steadfast Companions” (Sri Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol. 40, Ch. 18), told how Shirdi Baba, before leaving the body, gave His devotee Lakshmibai two gold coins. Swami explained that the two coins represent Sathya (Truth) and Dharma (Righteousness), and urged us to let our daily life be suffused with them. In the end, He said, what remains with us are sathya and dharma.

In His Dasara discourse of 9 October 2008 (Sri Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol. 41, Ch. 16), Swami also stressed that from Truth emerges righteousness, and that human intellect is to be used for righteous actions.

The Bhagavad Gita: “yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati bhārata”, whenever dharma declines and adharma rises, I manifest Myself (Bhagavad Gita 4.7); to protect the good, destroy evil, and re-establish dharma, I am born age after age (4.8). The Devi’s promise in the Saptashati mirrors this exactly.

The Srimad Bhagavatam tells how the gopis of Vraja worshipped Katyayani for a month, praying: “kātyāyani mahāmāye mahāyoginy adhīśvari, nanda-gopa-sutaṃ devaṃ patiṃ me kuru te namaḥ”, O Katyayani, great Maya, make the son of Nanda my Lord (Srimad Bhagavatam 10.22.4). Their prayer was not for worldly comfort but for union with the Divine.

7. What Everyone Should Understand

  • The Devi’s weapons are for protecting dharma, not for aggression. Dharma, not victory, is the goal.
  • Praying to Katyayani for marriage is a valid tradition, but the gopis show its highest form: seeking the Divine as one’s true beloved.
  • Respect for the guru and for teachers is part of Navaratri; the Devi herself was born from a rishi’s tapas.
  • Truth and dharma are not abstract ideals. Swami calls them the companions that stay with us when everything else falls away.

8. Practical Orientation for Day 6

  • Chanting: Repeat “Om Devi Katyayanyai Namah” 108 times, or the gopis’ Katyayani mantra from Srimad Bhagavatam 10.22.4.

Mantra and dhyana shloka of Maa Katyayani

ॐ देवी कात्यायन्यै नमः

चन्द्रहासोज्ज्वलकरा शार्दूलवरवाहना ।

कात्यायनी शुभं दद्याद्देवी दानवघातिनी ॥

candrahāsojjvalakarā śārdūlavaravāhanā |

kātyāyanī śubhaṃ dadyād devī dānavaghātinī ||

May Devi Katyayani, slayer of demons, whose hand shines with the Chandrahasa sword and who rides the noble lion, grant us auspiciousness.

  • Reading: Read Chapter 6 of the Durga Saptashati, the slaying of Dhumralochana.
  • Honour a teacher: Thank a teacher, mentor, or elder, in person if possible.
  • Two coins: Following Swami’s teaching, keep truth and dharma before you today: speak no untruth, and in every decision ask what is right.
  • Stand for someone: Support one person who is being treated unfairly.

yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati bhārata |

abhyutthānam adharmasya tadātmānaṃ sṛjāmyaham ||

(Bhagavad Gita 4.7)

Tomorrow: Day 7, Maa Kalaratri, the light that conquers darkness.
