NAVARATRI 2026 – Nine Nights for Nine Inner Transformations
Sharad Navaratri 2026 (11–20 October 2026) and Vijayadashami 21 October 2026
Navaratri 2026 · Day 5 – Maa Skandamata: The Mother as First Teacher
1. Who Is Maa Skandamata?
On the fifth day we worship Maa Skandamata, the mother of Skanda (Kartikeya, Murugan), commander of the divine army. She sits on a lotus or rides a lion, holding lotuses in two hands, with the infant Skanda seated in her lap and her other hand raised in blessing.
She is the Mother in her most tender form, and yet the child she nurtures is the one who will defeat the demon Tarakasura. The teaching is profound: the greatest strength is formed in the lap of love. What a mother gives a child in values, speech, and example becomes the child’s power in the world.
In the Navadurga sequence of the Devi Kavacham (shlokas 3–5), she is “pañcamaṃ Skandamāteti”, the fifth.
2. The Durga Saptashati Link
The Uttama Charitra, the third and longest section of the Durga Saptashati, begins in Chapter 5 (Devi Mahatmya, chapters 5–13; Markandeya Purana, adhyayas 85–93). It is presided over by Mahasaraswati, the Mother of wisdom and speech.
Chapter 5 contains the celebrated Aparajita Stuti, “yā devī sarvabhūteṣu…”, in which the gods bow to the Devi who dwells in all beings in many forms. Two of those forms speak directly to Skandamata’s day: the Devi who dwells in all beings as intelligence (buddhi-rūpeṇa saṃsthitā) and as mother (mātṛ-rūpeṇa saṃsthitā). The Mother who teaches the child and the wisdom the child receives are one and the same Devi.
[Line numbering of the Aparajita Stuti varies between editions; add exact shloka numbers from your copy]3. The Astrological Link
In this series, the astrology lens for Maa Skandamata is Mercury (Budha): the purified mind and discrimination. Mercury governs intelligence, speech, learning, communication, commerce, and the youthful, curious mind. It rules Mithuna and Kanya and is exalted in Kanya.
Mercury is itself the eternal youth among the grahas, and Skandamata holds a child. This day is especially about the young: their learning, their speech, and the values that shape their thinking. Note too that the Sun is in sidereal Kanya, Mercury’s own sign of exaltation, during much of Navaratri.
4. Astrology Message for the Day
Day 5 supports those with an afflicted Mercury: debilitated in Meena, combust, or joined with Rahu or Mars. Such placements can show as scattered thinking, nervousness, difficulty in study, careless speech, or problems in contracts and communication.
The remedy suggested by Skandamata is to purify speech and steady the intellect. Speak less and more truthfully; finish one task before starting the next; read something uplifting each day. Parents may find this a good day to reflect on what their own speech and example are teaching their children.
5. A Message for Youngsters
Skanda became a great warrior because of what he received in his mother’s lap. Think about what you have received from your mother, or from whoever raised you: values, sacrifices, and lessons you may not yet appreciate.
Today, thank your mother in a way she will feel, not just with a quick message. Spend time with her, ask about her life, or help her without being asked. And think about your own words: the way you speak online and offline shapes who you become.
6. Inner Message from Swami, Scripture, and the Sages
Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, in His Dasara discourse of 14 October 1988 (Sri Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol. 21, “The Mother Divine”), taught that one’s mother is the foremost teacher, and that the Navaratri festival teaches the profound truth that the mother comes first. He warned that if one’s mother is unhappy, all the worship offered to Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati during Navaratri will yield no fruit.
In His discourse of 9 October 1994, Swami explained that Saraswati is manifest in us as the power of speech (vak). Every word we speak is therefore an offering, or an insult, to the Mother of wisdom.
The Taittiriya Upanishad gives the graduating student the instruction “mātṛdevo bhava”, let your mother be a god to you (Taittiriya Upanishad 1.11.2).
The Chandogya Upanishad closes the teaching of Sage Sanatkumara by saying that he leads the seeker beyond darkness, and so he is called Skanda (Chandogya Upanishad 7.26.2). Skanda, the child of Skandamata, stands for the knowledge that carries us across ignorance.
The Bhagavad Gita: Sri Krishna says that among sciences He is the knowledge of the Self, and among debaters He is the reasoning that seeks truth (Bhagavad Gita 10.32).
7. What Everyone Should Understand
- Honouring the mother at home is not separate from Navaratri worship; according to Swami, it is the heart of it.
- Education is incomplete without values. Mercury gives intelligence, but the Mother gives the wisdom to use it well.
- Speech is sacred. In the tradition, Saraswati is Vak, the goddess of the word.
- Parents are a child’s first scripture. Children learn far more from what they see than from what they are told.
8. Practical Orientation for Day 5
- Honour your mother: Touch her feet, call her, or, if she has passed, offer a lamp and a prayer in her memory.
- Chanting: Repeat “Om Devi Skandamatayai Namah” 108 times.
Mantra and dhyana shloka of Maa Skandamata
ॐ देवी स्कन्दमातायै नमः
सिंहासनगता नित्यं पद्माश्रितकरद्वया ।
शुभदास्तु सदा देवी स्कन्दमाता यशस्विनी ॥
siṃhāsanagatā nityaṃ padmāśritakaradvayā |
śubhadāstu sadā devī skandamātā yaśasvinī ||
May the glorious Devi Skandamata, ever seated on the lion throne and holding lotuses in her two hands, always grant auspiciousness.
- Reading: Read Chapter 5 of the Durga Saptashati, or recite the “yā devī sarvabhūteṣu” verses.
- Speech fast: For one hour, or one meal, keep silence, and for the rest of the day speak only what is true, kind, and necessary.
- Family satsang: Read one short story from the Puranas or from Swami’s life aloud with children in the house.
yā devī sarvabhūteṣu mātṛrūpeṇa saṃsthitā |
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ ||
(Devi Mahatmya, adhyaya 5)
Tomorrow: Day 6, Maa Katyayani, the strength of dharma.
