Mars in Ashlesha, Gandanta and the Mars–Ketu Conjunction: 17 Oct 2026 – 20 Nov 2026

Personal guidance and mundane indications

Why this transit matters

From 17 October to 20 November 2026, Mars moves through one of the most sensitive stretches of the zodiac. It begins in Ashlesha nakshatra, crosses the Cancer–Leo gandanta, and then meets Ketu in the opening degrees of Leo.

Throughout Ashlesha, Mars is debilitated (neecha) in Cancer. Its point of deepest debilitation, 28° Cancer, falls inside this nakshatra. The warrior planet is in the sign of feeling, not action, so its energy turns inward and surfaces as emotional reactions rather than clean, decisive effort.

Two further factors make this transit more layered than it first appears. Until 30 October, Mars shares Cancer with an exalted Jupiter, which gives it real support. Jupiter then moves into Leo and joins Ketu, so when Mars arrives there in mid-November, it completes a three-planet conjunction of Mars, Jupiter and Ketu in Magha, with Rahu directly opposite in Aquarius. Around this period the Sun is also debilitated in Libra, and Mercury, Venus and Saturn are all retrograde for part of it.

None of this is cause for fear. Understood in advance, a transit like this becomes a period for restraint, inner work and careful living, both for individuals and for society.

Note on calculation: positions use the KP (Krishnamurti) ayanamsa; dates are for India. In New Zealand and Fiji, an event late in the Indian day may fall on the following date.

Mars in Ashlesha: 17 October 2026 – 12 November 2026

Ashlesha spans 16°40′ to 30° Cancer. Its presiding deity is the Nagas, its symbol is the coiled serpent, and its ruling planet is Budha (Mercury). It is the nakshatra of penetrating insight, but also of grip, entanglement and hidden poison.

Please Note: When fiery Mars passes through this watery, Mercury-ruled star, emotions run high and words become weapons. A small remark can sting far more than intended. Old hurts can resurface, and arguments can flare from very little. With Mercury, the nakshatra lord, retrograde from 24 October to 13 November, messages are also more easily misread.

The guidance for this period is simple: pause before you react. Let a strong feeling settle before you speak, send a message, or make a decision.

The Bhagavad Gita describes the speech that counts as true austerity:

words that cause no agitation and are truthful, pleasant and beneficial

(anudvega-karaṁ vākyaṁ satyaṁ priya-hitaṁ ca yat,

Bhagavad Gita, Adhyaya 17, Shloka 15).

That is the standard to hold during this transit.

Jupiter’s protecting hand: 17 – 30 October

For the first two weeks, Mars is not alone in Cancer. Jupiter, exalted in this sign, is also there in Ashlesha. Jupiter is the planet that becomes exalted in the very sign where Mars falls, and many astrologers read its presence as a partial cancellation of debility (neechabhanga). Together they also form the Guru–Mangala yoga, which joins courage to wisdom.

In practice, this makes the second half of October the most constructive part of the transit. Effort guided by a teacher, a principle or a plan works well. Once Jupiter leaves for Leo on 30 October, Mars is left to its debilitation, and the pressure of the coming gandanta is felt more fully.

Ashlesha’s challenge: tangled habits

The serpent of Ashlesha coils and holds on. In daily life this shows up as habits that are hard to release: gossip, addictive patterns, overindulgence in food or sensual pleasure, and the urge to control others.

Mars energises whatever it touches, so these tendencies can grow stronger for a few weeks.

The Gita names the root of this chain:

dwelling on objects of the senses breeds attachment, attachment breeds desire, and thwarted desire becomes anger

(Bhagavad Gita, Adhyaya 2, Shlokas 62–63).

Three practices help untie the coil:

  • Mindful speech. Speak less about others, especially behind their backs. If a conversation turns to gossip, step away.
  • Moderation. Eat simply, sleep on time, and go easy on alcohol, screens and other habits that pull at you.
  • Self-awareness. Notice when a craving or irritation rises. Naming it quietly to yourself is often enough to loosen its hold.

The Gandanta crossing: 5 – 20 November

Gandanta means “knot at the end”. It marks the junction where a water sign gives way to a fire sign: the last pada of Ashlesha (26°40′ – 30° Cancer) and the first pada of Magha (0° – 3°20′ Leo). Mars enters this zone on 5 November, crosses into Leo on 12 November 2026, and does not clear it until about 20 November 2026. Planets passing through a Gandanta are considered unsettled, like a traveller caught between two shores.

On the Cancer side (5–12 November 2026), the week can feel emotionally heavy, confused or draining, as if one chapter is closing before the next has properly begun.

On the Leo side (12–20 November 2026), the mood changes from heaviness to volatility, because this is where Mars meets Jupiter and Ketu.

On 8 November 2026, Mars reaches 28° Cancer, its point of deepest debilitation. That day is also Deepavali.

The festival of lights falling on the darkest point of Mars’s journey is a fitting reminder:

When outer energy is at its lowest, light the lamp within.

Plan lightly around this date.

Rest, keep to routine, and postpone important launches, signatures or difficult conversations if you can,

while celebrating the festival with devotion rather than excess.

Mars, Ketu and Jupiter in Magha: 10 – 20 November

After leaving Ashlesha, Mars enters Leo and Magha nakshatra, where Ketu is already transiting (it has been in Leo since 2025) and Jupiter arrives on 30 October 2026. Jupiter and Ketu join exactly on 12 November 2026, Mars meets Ketu exactly on 14 November 2026, and Mars meets Jupiter exactly on 16 November 2026. Rahu sits directly opposite in Aquarius, and Mars throws its seventh aspect onto it. From 12 November, Mars in Leo also casts its eighth aspect on a retrograde Saturn in Pisces.

Ketu magnifies and detaches. Combined with Mars,

It can release anger that has been held down for a long time,

often suddenly and out of proportion to the trigger.

Classical texts associate this pairing with sharp, abrupt events,

so it calls for physical care as well as emotional restraint.

Jupiter’s presence changes the picture. It cannot remove the fire, but it can give it direction. The same energy that produces rash action in some will produce principled courage, decisive dharmic choices and a burst of spiritual effort in others. Much depends on whether we let Jupiter, the guru, guide Mars.

During these ten days:

  • Drive patiently and avoid rushing, especially at night.
  • Handle knives, tools, fire and machinery with full attention.
  • Avoid confrontations, ultimatums and impulsive purchases or commitments.
  • Channel surplus energy into exercise, physical work or seva.

The same combination has a higher side. Ketu is a moksha karaka, Jupiter is the guru, and Mars gives courage. Directed inward through sadhana, this energy can cut through old patterns with remarkable force.

Mundane astrology: what this transit may mean for the world

Mundane astrology (Medini Jyotisha) applies the same planetary principles to nations, governments, economies and the collective mood rather than to individual lives. Its indications describe tendencies and periods of heightened risk, not fixed events. The usual way to read them is in the light of each nation’s own chart, its current dasha, and eclipses and other major transits.

What each factor represents in mundane astrology

Factor Mundane significations
Mars Armed forces, police, fire, weapons, land and property, engineering, accidents
Cancer and Ashlesha The public and its mood, the homeland, housing, water, seas and ports, and food – Ashlesha adds poisons, chemicals, intoxicants and secret dealings.
Leo and Magha Heads of state, governments, the “throne”, old establishments and ancestral institutions
Ketu Sudden and unexplained events, explosions, separatism, infections, and also renunciation and spiritual striving
Jupiter Law and the judiciary, religion, teachers, banking and finance
Rahu in Aquarius Mass movements, technology and networks, aviation, foreign influence
Debilitated Sun in Libra Weakened authority of governments and leaders, pressure on the executive

Indications for the world

Public mood and unrest (17 October – 12 November). A debilitated Mars in the sign of the masses, aspecting Rahu, points to an emotional and reactive public mood. Protests, strikes, and communal or sectarian tension can flare from small causes. Inflammatory speech and misinformation are likely to spread quickly, especially while Mercury is retrograde. Until 30 October, Jupiter’s presence favours mediation, the courts and restraint.

Water, weather and the sea. Cancer is the most watery of signs. This transit coincides with the post-monsoon cyclone season in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea and with the start of the South Pacific cyclone season on 1 November. Heavy rain, flooding, maritime incidents, port disruption and naval tensions deserve attention.

Chemicals, toxins and food safety. Ashlesha’s serpent symbolism links it with poison. Industrial chemical or gas leaks, contamination of food or water supplies, and issues around narcotics and pharmaceuticals are classic indications of Mars in this nakshatra.

Leaders and governments (12 – 20 November 2026). When Mars joins Jupiter and Ketu in Leo, the sign of rulers, with Rahu opposite and the Sun still debilitated until 16 November, heads of state and ruling establishments come under pressure. Sudden political turns, challenges to authority, splits within parties, and clashes between governments and courts or religious bodies (Jupiter) are possible.

Fire, explosions and transport (10 – 20 November 2026, peak 14 – 16 November 2026). Mars–Ketu is the most traditional mundane signature for fires, blasts and industrial accidents. With Rahu in Aquarius on the opposite side, aviation, rail and network failures also need extra vigilance.

Security and conflict. Mars aspects Rahu throughout, and from 12 November 2026 it aspects a retrograde Saturn as well. This suggests border tensions, militant activity and security alerts. Because Mars is debilitated and then in gandanta, actions taken in this period tend to be rash or poorly planned rather than decisive. Jupiter’s involvement keeps the door open for diplomacy.

Economy and markets. A debilitated Sun, retrograde Mercury (24 October 2026– 13 November 2026), retrograde Venus (until 14 November 2026, and debilitated in Virgo from 6 to 22 November 2026) and retrograde Saturn together point to volatile markets, trade and currency disputes, and pressure on property and construction. Gold and energy prices may swing sharply, and food prices are sensitive under Cancer. These are general tendencies, not investment advice.

Religion and spirituality. Jupiter with Ketu in Magha, the nakshatra of the Pitris, favours religious observance, pilgrimage, ancestral rites and renewed interest in spiritual teaching. The same combination can also stir disputes over religious institutions and their leadership.

India: the Independence chart

India’s Independence chart (15 August 1947, 00:00, New Delhi) has Taurus rising with five planets in Cancer in the third house. The Moon and Mercury are in Pushya, and Saturn, Venus and the Sun are in Ashlesha. This transit therefore passes directly over the heart of India’s chart.

  • Jupiter over India’s natal Sun (around 17 October 2026). A protective start: support for the government and for constructive national initiatives in the second half of October.
  • Mars over natal Saturn (24 October) and natal Venus (28 October). Labour unrest, strain on infrastructure and the working classes (Saturn), and pressure on trade, the arts and diplomatic relations (Venus).
  • Mars over natal Sun on 8 November, at its deepest debilitation. The most sensitive single day for India in this period, coinciding with Deepavali. Pressure falls on the central government and the executive, so fire safety during the festival and restraint in public statements matter.
  • Third house: neighbours, borders and the media. Cancer is India’s third house, so tensions with neighbours, border incidents and controversies in the media and communications are likely themes.
  • Fourth house: the homeland (12 – 20 November 2026). Leo is India’s fourth house of internal peace, the public, land, agriculture and education. Mars, Jupiter and Ketu there, opposite Rahu in the tenth house of government, point to domestic tensions, questions of public order and law, and issues over land and property policy.
  • Looking ahead. Ketu moves from Leo into Cancer between late November and early December, depending on whether the true or mean node is used, and will then transit India’s natal planets in Ashlesha. This deserves close watching into 2027.

A full mundane reading for India would also weigh the national dasha and the 1950 Republic chart; the points above describe the transit’s broad influence.

Sensitive windows for world events

Dates (2026) Why these dates stand out
22 – 28 Oct Mercury turns retrograde (24 Oct 2026); Mars crosses India’s natal Saturn and Venus
8 – 9 Nov Mars at 28° Cancer and over India’s natal Sun; New Moon (9 Nov 2026) with a debilitated Sun
12 Nov Mars enters Leo and the second half of the gandanta; Jupiter–Ketu exact
13 – 16 Nov Mercury turns direct (13 Nov 2026), Venus turns direct (14 Nov 2026), Mars–Ketu (14 Nov 2026) and Mars–Jupiter (16 Nov 2026) exact: the peak window
Late Nov – early Dec Rahu and Ketu change signs; Ketu enters Cancer and Ashlesha

Collective indications call for collective remedies. Group prayer, community seva and satsang, such as a shared recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa or Vishnu Sahasranama, are the traditional response to a difficult period for society as a whole.

Who may feel it most

Everyone experiences a transit, but these charts are likely to feel it more strongly.

Ascendant Mars transit position Areas that may feel the pressure
Aries Lagna lord debilitated in the 4th house, then with Jupiter and Ketu in the 5th Home, mother, peace of mind, property; later children and speculation
Cancer Yogakaraka debilitated in the lagna (with exalted Jupiter until 30 Oct) Health, temperament, career and children
Leo Yogakaraka with Jupiter and Ketu in the lagna, Rahu in the 7th Energy, temper, physical safety, sense of self, partnerships
Scorpio Lagna lord debilitated in the 9th house, then in the 10th with Jupiter and Ketu Father, teachers, long journeys, faith; later career and status

The transit also matters more for:

  • people with planets in the last degrees of Cancer or the first degrees of Leo
  • people with the Moon in Cancer or Leo, since Mars is transiting the janma rashi or the second house from it
  • anyone running a Mars or Ketu dasha, bhukti or antara

In KP astrology, the final result always depends on the individual chart: the sub-lords of the houses involved and the current dasha. A transit sets the weather; your own chart decides how it is experienced.

Remedies and practical guidance

Remedies work best when they are simple and done with sincerity.

For Mars

  • Recite the Hanuman Chalisa, especially on Tuesdays.
  • Chant the Mangal mantra Om Angarakaya Namah (108 times is traditional).
  • Worship Lord Subrahmanya (Kartikeya), who governs Mars.
  • Donate red lentils (masoor dal) or offer service on Tuesdays.

For Ketu

  • Pray to Lord Ganesha before starting any important work.
  • Spend some time each day in meditation or silent japa.
  • Offer food to stray dogs, a traditional Ketu remedy.

For Jupiter’s grace

  • Honour your guru and elders, and spend time with sacred texts on Thursdays.
  • Offer help to teachers, students or those in need of guidance.

For everyday life

  • Count to ten before replying when you feel provoked.
  • Keep difficult conversations short, calm and in person rather than by text.
  • Take regular physical exercise to release restless energy safely.
  • Remember the Gita’s warning that desire, anger and greed are the three gates that lead the self to ruin (Bhagavad Gita, Adhyaya 16, Shloka 21).

A closing thought

Mars in Ashlesha, the gandanta crossing and the meeting with Ketu and Jupiter together make this one of the more demanding transits of 2026, for individuals and for the world. They are not a sentence of misfortune. They are an invitation to slow down, guard our words, and turn fiery energy towards self-discipline and service.   By 20 November 2026 the intensity begins to ease. Those who use these weeks for patience and sadhana often find they come through clearer and stronger.
