Shailaputri literally means Daughter of the Mountains. On the first day of Navaratri Mother Durga is worshipped as SHAILAPUTRI. She is the most powerful and glorified of all the nine forms of Durga. She is an incarnation of Parvati. In a previous birth, She was Sati who threw Herself into the yagna fire due to Her father’s insult of Her beloved husband, Shiva. She was born again as the daughter of the Himalayas and took the aspect of Shailputri to destroy pride and the demons. We pray to Her to help us surrender to the Divine. Her colour is red.

Mantra to be chanted on this day is  “Om Hreem Shri Shailaputri Durgaaye Namaha”

What to offer?  Devotees offer pure ghee on the foot of Goddess Shailputri. It is believed that by offering pure ghee the devotees are blessed with a life free of diseases and illness.
