October–November 2026: A Month for Pausing

Mars in Cancer, Jupiter’s Gandanta, the Eclipse Points and the Turn Inward

A KP and Vedic reading of the sky, with guidance from the scriptures · Ravinder Grover

In my forty years of studying the sky, I have learned that some months ask us to act, and some ask us to pause. October 2026 is clearly a month for pausing. Mars is debilitated in Cancer, several planets turn retrograde, the Sun weakens in Libra, and at the end of the month Jupiter leaves its protective place in Cancer. The heavens are quietly preparing us for a much more intense November, when Mars meets Jupiter and Ketu in Magha.

Many people may find their moods shifting more than usual, their patience running short, and ordinary tasks taking more effort than they should. Jupiter stays in Cancer for most of October, so perspective is available if we choose to use it. My message is simple: slow down, review carefully, speak wisely, and keep your inner balance. This is a testing time, not a hopeless one, and steadiness matters more than worry.

Why look to the sky at all?

The Pāṇinīya Śikṣā pictures the Veda as a body in which Jyotiṣa is the eyes, and the Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad lists Jyotiṣa among the six Vedāṅgas (Pāṇinīya Śikṣā 41–42; Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad 1.1.5). Its purpose is to read Kāla, time, so that we can act wisely within it. In the Gītā, Krishna says kālo ’smi, “I am Time” (Bhagavad Gītā, Chapter 11, Shloka 32). The same Gītā names daiva, destiny, as the fifth of the five factors behind any action (Chapter 18, Shloka 14). Astrology studies that fifth factor; the other four remain in our hands.

Key Dates at a Glance

The First Week: Two Oppositions

Mars opposes Pluto on 3 October, and the Sun opposes Saturn on 5 October. This is a strong combination. In the world, I expect friction between governments and the people they govern, security concerns, and reactions that are faster than they are wise. In our own lives, it may feel like pressure, impatience, or being held back. My advice is not to fight every pressure but to meet it with steadiness.

Bhagavad Gītā, Chapter 2, Shloka 14

mātrā-sparśās tu kaunteya śītoṣṇa-sukha-duḥkha-dāḥ

āgamāpāyino ’nityās tāṁs titikṣasva bhārata

Contact with the world brings heat and cold, pleasure and pain. These come and go; they are not permanent. Bear them patiently.

Mars in Cancer: 18 September to 12 November 2026

Mars is the planet of courage and action. Cancer belongs to the Moon, so his fire meets water here, and the classics place his deepest fall at 28° Cancer (Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra 3.49–50, Santhanam numbering). Jupiter, exalted in the same sign with its deepest point at 5°, is still there when Mars arrives.

In KP I never stop at the sign. A planet gives the results of its star lord, and the sub lord decides how those results finally turn out. Both change several times during this transit, which is why the same Mars can feel very different from one week to the next.

Phase Dates Nakshatra / Star lord Character
1 18 – 23 Sep Punarvasu / Jupiter Optimistic but restless opening
2 24 Sep – 17 Oct Pushya / Saturn Delay, restraint, duty; good for long-term work
3 17 Oct – 12 Nov Ashlesha / Mercury Speech, contracts, information and nerves sensitive
4 12 – 16 Nov Magha (Leo) / Ketu Sudden ruptures and endings; Venus sub from 14 Nov

For October, three windows stand out. From 9 to 11 October, Mars is in his own sub and then Rahu’s, just after aspecting the August 2026 lunar eclipse point on 7 October, so tempers and rumours rise. From 31 October to 4 November, Rahu holds the sub lordship just as Jupiter leaves Cancer and Mercury is retrograde: these are the most slippery days of the transit. On 8 November, Mars reaches his deepest fall at 28° Cancer with Saturn as sub lord, and vitality is at its lowest ebb. For the full phase-by-phase reading and the complete star and sub-lord ladder, please see my earlier article, October 2026: Mars in Cancer, Jupiter’s Gandanta and the Turn Inward.

Venus Retrograde in Libra: 3 October to 14 November

For about forty days, Venus moves backwards through its own sign, in Swati, Rahu’s star. I see this as a time to review relationships, agreements, money matters and, above all, what we truly value. Old connections may return and unfinished matters of the heart may resurface. I usually tell my clients not to make major purchases or new commitments during a Venus retrograde, because the true worth of a thing often becomes clear only when Venus moves forward again. With Mars and Pluto both aspecting Venus, please watch for power struggles at home and at work.

On 6 November Venus, still retrograde, re-enters Virgo, where it is debilitated, and it turns direct on 14 November at 28°43′ Virgo, within two degrees of its point of deepest fall. Venus signifies money and agreements, so I expect strain in trade, finance and negotiations through this period.

Bhagavad Gītā, Chapter 2, Shloka 70

āpūryaṃāṇam acala-pratiṣṭhaṁ samudram āpaḥ praviśanti yadvat

Rivers keep flowing into the ocean, yet the ocean stays full and unmoved. So the one whom desires enter without disturbing finds peace, not the one who chases every desire.

New Moon in Virgo, Saturn’s Return to Uttara Bhadrapada and Navaratri: 11 October

The New Moon at 4:50 am falls in Hasta, “the hand,” the nakshatra of skill and careful work. With Saturn opposing it, it is a sober beginning, better suited to refining, repairing and planning than to launching anything new. The same day, retrograde Saturn steps back into Uttara Bhadrapada, his own star, drawing our attention back to foundations and unfinished groundwork.

The presiding deity of Hasta is Savitr, the divine Sun who inspires the intellect. I cannot think of a better time to chant the Gayatri Mantra, which is addressed to Savitr Himself.

Rig Veda, Mandala 3, Sukta 62, Mantra 10 (Gayatri Mantra)

tat savitur vareṇyaṁ bhargo devasya dhīmahi

dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt

We meditate on the adorable radiance of the divine Savitr; may He illumine our understanding.

This New Moon also opens Navaratri, the nine nights celebrating the Divine Mother’s victory over Mahishasura. In a month of turmoil, it is a beautiful reminder that light always overcomes darkness, and that awareness overcomes ignorance within us.

Devi Mahatmya (Durga Saptashati), Chapter 11, Shlokas 54–55

The Devi promises that whenever the world is troubled by demonic forces, She will descend and destroy them. (Verse numbering varies slightly between editions.)

Pluto Turns Direct: 16 October 2026

Pluto turns direct in Capricorn and continues its slow reshaping of institutions and systems, a process that runs until about 2040. When structures around us feel shaky, it is tempting to fill the uncertainty with fearful predictions. The better path is to strengthen ourselves from within and act where we can.

Bhagavad Gītā, Chapter 6, Shloka 5

uddhared ātmanātmānaṁ nātmānam avasādayet

Lift yourself up by your own efforts; do not let yourself sink down. The mind can be your best friend or your worst enemy.

The Sun Enters Libra: 18 October 2026

Every year the Sun is at its weakest in Libra, and it enters in Chitra, Mars’s star. Confidence may dip, and leaders and authority figures may seem less certain or face more criticism. On 24 October the Sun and Venus meet at 6°39′ Libra, both in Mars’s star, so leadership and negotiation are coloured by Mars’s edge and his weakness. The focus moves from ourselves to others, which is good for cooperation, as long as we don’t neglect our own needs. The Sun’s strength returns only in mid-November.

Bhagavad Gītā, Chapter 3, Shloka 21

yad yad ācarati śreṣṭhas tat tad evetaro janaḥ

Whatever a leader does, others follow. When leadership falters in the world, each of us can still lead by example in our own home and community.

Mercury Retrograde in Libra: 24 October 2026 to 14 November 2026

Mercury turns retrograde at 26°50′ Libra in Vishakha, Jupiter’s star, joining Venus in a double period of review. Communication will be busy but easily misunderstood, and travel may bring delays. Double-check details, confirm arrangements in writing, and postpone important decisions where you can. When logic doesn’t seem to work, trust your intuition.

Bhagavad Gītā, Chapter 17, Shloka 15

anudvega-karaṁ vākyaṁ satyaṁ priya-hitaṁ ca yat

Speech that causes no distress and is truthful, pleasant and beneficial is called the austerity of speech. I can think of no better guide for any Mercury retrograde.

Full Moon in Aries, Ashwini Nakshatra: 26 October 2026

The Full Moon at 5:11 pm falls in Ashwini, the nakshatra of the Ashvini Kumaras, the divine physicians praised in the Rig Veda for their swift rescues and healing (for example, Rig Veda, Mandala 1, Sukta 116). It brings good energy for healing, repair and finishing tasks you have been putting off. But the Moon and Mars exchange signs, so it is easy to overdo things. Use this energy wisely, and save some for November.

Bhagavad Gītā, Chapter 6, Shloka 17

yuktāhāra-vihārasya yukta-ceṣṭasya karmasu

For one who is moderate in eating, recreation, work, sleep and waking, yoga removes all sorrow.

Jupiter’s Gandanta and the Magha Meeting

Jupiter stands for wisdom, dharma and protection. From 8 October he is in the last part of Ashlesha, the Gandanta zone at the Cancer–Leo junction, where a water sign ends and a fire sign begins. Tradition regards such junctions as places of transition and turbulence. He enters Leo on 31 October, ending his brief, protective stay in exalted Cancer. Because of his retrograde loop he stays in the zone until 21 February 2027, and he passes through it a second time from 4 June to 14 July 2027. Ashlesha belongs to the Sarpas and Magha to the Pitṛs, the ancestors, and Magha is Ketu’s nakshatra, so this is a sky about inheritance, reckoning and things cut short.

For those with a Leo ascendant or Leo Moon, Jupiter’s arrival is welcome relief after Ketu’s long transit. With Jupiter opposite Rahu, hidden truths may also come to light.

Here is the striking KP feature. Jupiter has Ketu as star lord and Venus as sub lord from 6 November 2026 to 18 January 2027. Mars joins the same star and sub on 14 November, and Ketu, moving backward through Magha, is there too. Mars is exactly conjunct Ketu on 15 November (true node). By 16 November, Mars (1°37′ Leo), Jupiter (1°43′ Leo) and Ketu (1°00′ Leo) all share Ketu as star lord and Venus as sub lord. In KP the sub lord decides how an event is fulfilled, so the outcome comes through Venus: treaties, trade, finance and alliances. Venus is itself debilitated and turns direct on 14 November.

Venus, as sub lord, puts treaties, alliances and money under strain in this window. Mars with Ketu points to sudden ruptures wherever force, fire, weapons or technology are involved, and Jupiter standing with them exposes institutions and those who lead them, with effects that can reach law, finance and public confidence. This is a tendency, not a certainty. The Bhīṣma Parva of the Mahābhārata lists omens before the Kurukshetra war, including Mars turning back towards Magha and Jupiter towards Śravaṇa (Mahābhārata, Bhīṣma Parva 6.3.13, critical edition). Scholars debate what the wording means and how to date the passage, so I offer it as an echo of the pattern, not as proof.

In our personal lives this meeting may bring sudden clarity or a decisive turning point: something falls away so that something new can grow.

Bhagavad Gītā, Chapter 2, Shloka 22

vāsāṁsi jīrṇāni yathā vihāya navāni gṛhṇāti naro ’parāṇi

Just as a person discards worn-out clothes and puts on new ones, so the soul moves on from what is old to what is new.

The Eclipse Points Activated This Season

An eclipse leaves a sensitive point in the zodiac that can stay active for months. Its effects are released when a planet, especially Mars, Saturn or Jupiter, later passes over that point or aspects it. Several recent eclipse points are triggered during this period, and they match the most sensitive dates above.

Eclipse point Date (NZDT) Activation
Total solar eclipse, 12 Aug 2026, Cancer 25°54′ (Ashlesha) 4 Oct 2026 Jupiter conjoins the point
4 Nov 2026 Mars conjoins the point, in Rahu’s sub, days before his deepest fall
Partial lunar eclipse, 28 Aug 2026, Aquarius 10°43′ 7 Oct 2026 Mars’s 8th aspect from Cancer
10 Dec 2026 Mars’s 7th aspect from Leo
Annular solar eclipse, 17 Feb 2026, Aquarius 4°42′ 23 Nov 2026 Mars’s 7th aspect from Leo, just after the Magha meeting
Partial solar eclipse, 29 Mar 2025, Pisces 14°52′ 6 Nov 2026 Saturn conjoins the point (Saturn entered Pisces on the eclipse day)
26 Dec 2026 Mars’s 8th aspect from Leo

The August 2026 total solar eclipse in Ashlesha was the most important of these. It is touched by Jupiter at the start of October  2026 and by Mars in the same week as his deepest fall, and, as described below, it is activated again in early 2027.

The Inner Experience

Mars is the part of us that says, “I will.” Cancer is the Moon’s house, so in this transit that voice has to pass through feeling before it becomes action, and mood shapes what we do more than usual. In KP the inner weather follows the sub lords. In the opening days, the Moon’s sub made the mind changeable. Through Pushya, Saturn steadies things but heavily: the mind turns serious and duty-bound, and lightness is harder to find. In Ashlesha, Mercury draws attention into thought, so worry and overthinking are more likely, especially under Rahu’s sub from 31 October to 4 November, when small doubts can swell. Around 8 November, at the point of deepest fall with Saturn as sub lord, vitality is at its lowest ebb.

The Moon’s sign also turns feeling inward, so displeasure is often held back first and released later, sometimes at the wrong person or at the wrong moment. It helps to name what is bothering you as soon as you notice it, and to address the cause rather than whoever is nearby.

Reading It in Your Own KP Chart

  • Step 1. From the sub-lord ladder in my earlier article, October 2026: Mars in Cancer, Jupiter’s Gandanta and the Turn Inward, note Mars’s star lord and sub lord on the dates that matter to you.
  • Step 2. Find those planets in your KP chart. The houses signified by the star lord show where Mars delivers, and the houses of the sub lord show the quality of the result.
  • Step 3. Check your running dasha, bhukti and antara first. Transit is the trigger; the dasha carries the promise.
  • Step 4. Check whether any eclipse point listed above falls within a few degrees of a planet, the Ascendant or a cusp in your chart. If it does, its activation dates are personal sensitive dates for you.

Work from the cusps in an actual KP analysis, not from sign shorthand.

Aries and Scorpio, the Mars signs

If Aries or Scorpio is your ascendant or Moon sign, or holds important planets in your chart, this transit speaks to you more directly. From Aries, Cancer is the 4th house: home, mother, property and inner peace. From Scorpio it is the 9th: fortune, dharma and gurus. For fixed signs the 9th is also the bādhaka house, ruled by the Moon (Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra, on bādhaka sthāna), so matters of belief, advice and travel deserve extra care. Mars also aspects the 4th, 7th and 8th houses from where he stands (Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra, Chapter 26), which from Cancer means Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius.

The Return in early 2027

Mars turns retrograde in Leo on 11 January 2027, returns to Cancer on 10 March, stations direct at 26°46′ Cancer on 2 April 2027, and leaves for Leo on 26 April. Jupiter turns retrograde on 13 December 2026 and is back in Cancer from 25 January 2027, and Ketu enters Cancer around 26 November 2026. So Mars returns to stand with both, and all three are in Ashlesha.

The August 2026 eclipse point is activated strongly in this window: Jupiter conjoins it again on 27 February, Ketu reaches it in mid-March, and Mars stations direct on 2 April less than a degree from it. I would watch February to April 2027 for the follow-through on whatever begins this autumn. Varāhamihira gives a chapter to the course of each planet, Mars among them (Bṛhat Saṃhitā, Chapter 6).

Meeting the Month with Steadiness

Astrology shows tendencies and patterns, and the Gītā gives the antidote to fear. Two verses help most:

Bhagavad Gītā, Chapter 2, Shloka 48

yoga-sthaḥ kuru karmāṇi saṅgaṁ tyaktvā dhanañjaya

siddhy-asiddhyoḥ samo bhūtvā samatvaṁ yoga ucyate

Established in yoga, do your work without attachment, remaining even-minded in success and failure. This evenness of mind is called yoga. (See also Chapter 2, Shloka 47: your right is to the action alone, not its fruits.)

Practical guidance

  • 24 September to 17 October: Saturn’s star rewards regularity, so keep a fixed daily routine and put your effort into long-term work.
  • 24 October to 4 November: Mercury is retrograde, and Mars and Rahu hold the sub lordship. Read documents and messages twice, and postpone signatures and launches if you can.
  • 8 to 12 November: Saturn is the sub lord at Mars’s deepest fall. Avoid taking on heavy commitments and allow extra rest.
  • 12 to 16 November: Mars regains strength in Ketu’s nakshatra with Venus as sub lord, so impatience shows up in dealings with others. Keep your side of any agreement precise, postpone negotiations whose tone you cannot control, and use the surge of energy for tasks that can be finished.

My suggested practice

  • Daily: chant the Gayatri Mantra, especially during the nine nights of Navaratri.
  • In speech: before speaking, ask the Gītā’s three questions (Chapter 17, Shloka 15): Is it true? Is it kind? Is it helpful?
  • In decisions: review now, act later. Let Mercury and Venus turn direct before committing to anything major.
  • In energy: follow the Gītā’s moderation (Chapter 6, Shloka 17), and keep some reserves for November.
  • For Mars: Tuesday is traditionally kept for Hanuman worship. Reciting the Hanuman Chalisa or Om Aṅgārakāya namaḥ is customary, and Om Namo Bhagavate Vāsudevāya is a widely used Viṣṇu mantra (Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 4.8.54). These are traditional practices, not scriptural prescriptions for Mars.

With warm wishes for a peaceful and blessed Navaratri,

This reading is a study of planetary tendencies for educational and spiritual reflection. It is not a prediction of certainty and does not replace personal judgement or professional advice. Positions, dates, star lord and sub lord data were computed with the Swiss Ephemeris (KP ayanamsa, true node). Scripture translations are brief renderings for reflection.
